Slate: Does Religion Make You Nice
The correlation between religion and happiness; Slate hits it right on the head by saying that the religious may have more of a social network. I just saw Robin Dunbar speak at the 2008 Nobel Conference, and he talks about how social interaction is absolutely necessary for humans to function as a species.
This is why I get upset when people think that atheists shouldn’t be members of a group like Minnesota Atheists. Having a social network of like-minded people is what keeps you happy and sane. I feel lucky that I was smart enough to seek out my partner in life and that we have each other to discuss ideas/to stand by one another, but not everyone has that.
If you’re an in-a-funk-freethinker, check out some of the great organizations/event listings on my main page links. You will have a social network in no time!
