Cover Meme

June 3, 2009 · 6 Comments

I was tagged from Almost Diamonds to try on this Cover Meme for size…  Best cover and worst cover ever.  Thanks, Miss Z, very fun!

Worst cover ever:  This was just too easy.  I almost feel like I cheated on the test by picking the easiest essay questions.  Hilary Duff fucking up The Who’s “My Generation” like it’s never been fucked up before.

Best cover ever:  A tie between Rufus Wainwright and Antony, both covering Leonard Cohen.  Anyone who has ever read my blog knows that I can’t pick one winner.  Ever.  Sorry, I can’t embed these two!  Click on them and listen.  Awesomeness.

Rufus with “Everybody Knows” by Leonard Cohen:  Even though his sister decided to flat out the backup vocals, he’s still amazing.

Antony with “If It Be Your Will” by Leonard Cohen:  He has such a sensitive, crazy, yet powerful treatment of this song.

I’m tagging Universal Heretic, Colloquy, Madman’s Paradise, and Absence of Good. Have fun, don’t hurt  your ears!  :)

Wow. I finally drove myself to listen to the Hillary Duff video now, having abandoned my faith in humanity for unrelated matters just prior, and thus having nothing to lose. It was not pleasant. But, then again, I call shenanigans: live performances always seem to be slightly to vastly more terrible than the recorded version, so I don’t know how much of the unmitigated horror to attribute to the video quality, as opposed to Hillary Duff not deserving to be a singer at all. Considering the brief snippet of the recorded version at the end, however, I think that the latter has at least some (significant) role in this.

The other two covers were good (of course), even for live performances (which I still view as a handicap) but I think Antony’s was better (because I like his voice better!).

I really enjoy how both of their voices sound. I do like Antony’s though for the raw emotion that he conveys through it. It is powerful, yet somehow sounds like he’s about to totally break down, which I find really interesting. Rufus was messing around a bit in this video, but I think he has more technique in his singing.

Oo, oo,ooo… Good taste! I watched these two on the original lc video a while back and though I really like rufus, his sister rains on his parade, and would definitely put antony on the top- if it came down to these two covers. Still a fan of buckley and simone covering cohen.

Thanks! :) I also like a lot of ‘bad’ music as well. I don’t hide the fact that I enjoy all sorts of music.

I don’t know what’s wrong with Martha… I mean, I like her okay, I’ve heard her sing okay by herself, she does some good backing vocals on his CDs, but live doing backing vocals for him I just don’t know what she’s doing. It’s awful.

Nothing wrong with a decent dose of bad music now and then. And I think why i’m extra partial to Antony is because he sounds like Nina. Almost interchangeable at times.

He has an awesome voice, doesn’t he? I just love it.
